It was not too long ago that Cairo held the claim to fame of having Africa's only subway system. That distinctive title goes away in 2009 with the opening of the long awaited Algiers metro.

But wait, Audran, there's more! Algeria has hopped on to the urban rail bandwagon and in just a few short years began several rail projects in at least three Budayeens with several more waiting on their own feasability studies to be completed. Where is all the money coming from? Many point to oil and gas. Others wink and look toward the house of Freidlander Bey, does it really matter? The import thing is that its coming. Algiers alone will have three new urban rail starter systems by 2010. Constantine's light rail line is already under construction and the city now has plans for a metro, despite claims of "enormes retards" by the Algerian president. Oran's tramway is also under construction, sans any comments about retards, which is comforting. Next on the feasability study bandwagon, Batria and Mostaganem, Bechar, Setif, Beautiful-Abbès Sidi and Ouargla.
