Trams and Subways In Australia

Are there really any subways in Australia?

It's all a matter of how you define a subway. After all, in the UK, a subway is an underground footpath. And, what happens when commuter trains are routed underground into an urban center to serve a series of subterranean stations? Such is the case in Sydney and Melbourne, both of whose systems are often defined as subways in reference texts.
