The Postlingbergbahn, the world's second* steepest streetcar line, is a 1000mm adhesion mountain railway running from the station at Urfahr (the tram 3 terminal) with gradients up to 10.6%. The line still uses original, turn-of-the-century carriages and is one of the few European tramways that still use trolleypoles. At the old fashioned pace of about 7 miles per hour, the 2.9 km line passes quaint, idyllic little stations and affords a leisurely view of the city of Linz, including the Linz Zoo. At the top is a renowned baroque pilgrim church; take a stroll while viewing the magnificent scenery; or a ride (with or without children) on the "Grottenbahn," a small train that traverses several grottoes populated by fairy tale folk. The trip takes about 20 minutes.
Built in 1898, the Postlingerbahn is 100 years old this year.
Inside the hill, visitors will find a fantasy world: the Grotto Railway.
Into the dragon's mouth, through the dwarf tunnel to a staircase leading
down into a fairyland. And on the outside, the world's steepest mountain
railway climbs to the top. Enjoy a ride through the picturesque landscape
- past the Linz Zoo. For adults, there are epicurean delights galore.
* The world's steepest adhesion
street railway is in Lisbon with a grade of 14.5%

The Grottenbahn

The Grotto Railway or "Cave Railway" (Grottenbahn) is a major attraction
for children. Inside a tower which was once part of the fortifications

tale world. On the lower level is a scale model of Linz Main Square.
The side streets of the model contain scenes
from well known fairy tales. And yes, the Grottenbahn can be rented!
