Campinas dead light rail, Heritage trolley, The 8 km, 11 station Campinas LRT was opened in 1993. It was later dismantled and converted to a busway as the line served a thinly populated area. (The system required 100,000 per day in ridership to recoup expenses, but daily ridership averaged only 5,000.) In the interim, the tickets booths became kiosks for illegal drugs, and 2 corpses were found in them on one occasion. The cost of the LRT project was $200 million. Some of the VLT rolling stock is now housed in the FEPASA shops in Rio Claro, 81 km northwest of Campinas Campinas is also home to a heritage tramway in Portugal Park.
