Cariri
light rail
Adjacent to Fortoleza and being developed by
Metrofor is the Cariri metro, a 13.6 km diesel light rail line which will utilize
mostly existing abandoned trackage and opened in Aust
2009. The line serves the towns of Crato and Juazeiro
do Norte in the Cariri region. Although
referred to as a Metro, it more resembles a regional light rail line
similar to the River Line in New Jersey. All sections will be above
ground. The operating authority, the Caerense Metropolitan Transportation Authority, is now working on a norther branch which will integrate with the new line. The two branches line, known as the Metro Sobral, is expected to be 11 kn long.
