subway, light rail under construction

The 2 line Recife metro, built in1985, consists of 32.3 km and 24 stations. Construction on 9 underground km of line 2 began in 2000, and a 10 station south line was gradually opened in 2002-2003.

Because Recife boasts an illiteracy rate exceeding 10%, station announcements are more frequent than on other systems.
