Marseille
Metro, light rail subway

Metro
Marseille's metro
opened in 1977. It uses the rubber tired technology used in the Pairs
Metro. With 21.5 km, 2 lines and 28 stations, it is one of France's
smaller metros, especially for a city of 1.6 million souls. Most of the routes are underground.
A 2.5 km extension opened ini April 2010. Another extension to
Line 2 is
under investigation, and two more lines arfe also planned..

Light Rail
The first section of a partially underground 15 km, 2 line light rail
system opened in 2007. The .6 km tram tunnel was built in 1893, and
some
purists suggest it was the true first subway on the European continent,
as opposed to the one in Budapest. Formerly used by Line 68,
the tunnel and tracks have been rebuilt and now serves Line 1.
Line 3 is expected to open in 2011.
One may note the unusual appearance of Marseille's trams, resembling
ships. This was apparently done to deliberately recognize the city as
France's largest seaport.
