Light Rail

The tramway de Nantes opened in 1985 but is not Nantes' first tram, which actually opened in 1879 and closed in 1958. Until 2008, the 3 line, 41.4 km system was, however, France's busiest and largest light rail system, carrying over 256,000 passengers daily. A small extension connecting lines 1 and 2 is under construction and due to be completed in 2010. Other future plans include the integration of the system into a more regional-like Karlruhe model.
