At 270,000 inhabitants, Rennes is one of the smallest cities in the world to have a metro. It currently consists of one 8.6 km line, 1 km of which is underground. The line opened in March, 2002 and uses the VAL technology. A second line was commissioned in late 2010. The12.6 km, 15 station Line 2 will be mostly undergroiund. It is expected to open in 2018..
