Dresden's DVB operates a 12 line, 204 km network which began
in 1872 as a horse-drawn line. It is unknown who drew the horses or how
they were erased when the time came. Newer and rebuilt sectons have
been upgraded to light rail. There are no subway sections.
Opened in 1891, Dresden's shwebebahn, or hanging monorail, is the oldest of its kind in the world. Actually a hanging funicular railway, it runs 274 meters, connecting the suburban areas of Loschwitz and Oberloschwitz, with oberloschwitz clearly being the superior of the two.
