The first phase of the first phase of the 15 km light rail system system was expected to be operational by January 2001, but due to political infighting, the project is still in the feasibility study stage. MSDRC claimed in 2000 that it had been "entrusted" with a light rail system in Pune and Nagpur. According to this 2001 article, the system was "under implementation".

IBy 2008, the project had morphed into a 39.5 km full blown, 3 line metro for Pune. Managed by DMRC, the project was scheduled to break ground in 2009.
