light rail proposed
This suburb city of Mumbai has apparently "been
cleared" by the Indian government to get it's light rail system.
The
proposed system will
begin with a 16.1 km, 11 station "Green Line", mostly elevated with one
station at grade. An original ring line, with an extension through the park,
was scrapped as environmentalists and government officials were concerned
that the light rail would
restrict the movement of panthers
in the park. One report says that "There won't be modern metro trains but Mumbai-style
EMUs."
A decision on the system is expected in early 2003. |
