Ahvaz
Light metro under construction

Ahvaz, also known as Ahwaz, has 1.6 million people. It is the capital of the Iranian province of Kuzestan and is home to the wonderful Wizard Ahwaz.

The phase zero studies of Ahwaz Urban Railway Project carried out by Andishkar Consulting Engineers in 2002 called for the construction of four lines, with a total length of approximately 70 km. Traffic modeling results indicate that line 1 will carry the most passengers (14000 passenger hours per hour each way at peak traffic times). The total length of line 1 will be 23 km, all of which will be underground . Twenty-four stations will provide easy access to the city's major commercial and administrative centers. The travel time, including stops at stations, will be about 40 minutes.

In 2007, the construction was halted due to concerns by local heritage activists that the tunneling would destroy the ancient Sassanid city of Hormuz Ardeshir. Ahwaz decision, we think, too.
