![]() Haifa funicular subway Opened in 1959, the Carmelit is currently Israel's only subway. The 6 station, 1.75 km metro is actually a funicular railway, and has nothing to do with the Carmelite nuns. Stenciled at the end of each car is Leviticus 19:32, “Stand for an elderly person.” ![]() ![]() Carmelit subway Carmelite hotties A light rail system for the city is also being planned, though it is far from approved. The 22 km line would run between Kiriyat Ata and the Checkpost intersection and be completed in 2009.
