Mama Mia! What a smorgasbord of traction fun Italy offers! The light rail Renaissance is there in full force, something you can see just by looking at the planned systems and those under construction. There are also many diesel rail-bus lines throughout the country. Private railways not covered here that are similar to tramways or interurbans include La Ferroviara Italiana, lines Arezzo – Stia and Arezzo – Sinalunga, south of Firenze, the FCU, the ACT Reggio-Emilia, the Ferrovie della Calabria, and the FSF (Ferrovia Suzarra – Ferrara) .

Whether you're the Pope (who, by the way, told me he does not have a personal subway) or the humble Corleones out for an evening stroll, Italy is a great place for metros and light rail. Da Vinci would be proud.

The Italian Electric Cities Project is well worth checking out. Be sure to check out this part of the site! (Note 12/2003 - It appears the site has not been updated for about a year.)
