light rail subway, metro VAL

Metro

The first 9.6 km section, 15 station VAL subway opened in 2006 and runs completely underground from Porta Nuova station via Porta Susa to Collegno. A 6 station, 3.9 km southern extension from Porta Nuova to Ligotto opened in 2011, making the line 13.2 km with 21 stations. A two station southwest extension is under construction and expected to be operating in 2013. Two additional lines, all underground, are
in the planning stages.

Light Rail

Turins trams cover 220 km, including light rail lines 3 and 9. Line 4 has beenupgraded to light rail, and an underground section crossing the city center links Line 1 of the new metro.

Italian State Railways (Trenitalia) is building the Passante, a 12 km commuter rail link from Stura to Lingotto with 7 km underground. The rolling stock will use RegioSprinter technology.
