Hakodate City

tramway

Hakodate sits near the end of the Oshima Peninsula in southwestern Hokkaido. Hakodate is the marine gateway to Japan's main island in the north. It was one of the first Japanese cities to open to Western trade.

The Hakodate streetcar started as a horse tramway in 1897, and became a true electric street railway in 1913. The double-tracked tramway consists of 2 lines, the Omori line and the River line,  totaling 10.9 km. Most of the two lines share the same right of way. Another tramway (pictured above in cream and maroon) actually climbs Mount Hakodate, where the view is supposed to be world famous.
