Kitakyushu, home to just over 1 million sours, is the result of combining five different cities about 31 years ago, the most famous of which is Kokura. It is the home to a world class amusement park known as "Space World", where you can sign up for a three day "space camp".

The city has 1 tram line and a monorail. Recently, a 5.1 km line run by the Nishi-Nippon Railroad Co., or "Nishitetsu", was abandoned. However, the authority still runs a 16 station 20.8 km interurban style line, the "Miyaji Peak line", and the 95 km Tenzin Omuta line, known as "the bullet train streetcar".

The Chikuho Electric Railroad Co runs the 15.4 km. line from Kurosaki to Nogata, which opened in 1911 . In January 2001, the Chikuho took delivery of 3 low floor cars built in Japan, known locally as "Little Dancers".

The Kitakyushu Rapid Railway Co runs the 8.8 km 13 station Hitachi Kokura  monorail opened in 1985. The "Kokura Line" is just one of three urban monorail lines planned for the Kitakyushu.
