Comments Kyoto has 4 mass transit railways, including the municipal subway, the Hankyu Electric Railway (2.1 miles underground), the Keihan Electric Railway (1.4 miles underground) and a 14.4 mile extension that links with the Keifuku Electric Railway. The new Tozai (east-west) line is completely automated. The municipal subway is mostly underground, with the exception of one station.

Kyoto has the honour of the oldest streetcar line in Japan, the Fushimi line of the Kyoto Electric Railway, which opened in 1895. Sadly, the line closed in 1971. Currently, Kyoto's has only 4 tram lines:  two on the the Keifuku Denetsu, or the "Ranzan line" to Arayashima, opened in 1910, and two on the 21.6 km line to Otsu, opened in 1912 and run by the Eizan Electric Railway Co.
