Utrecht
Light Rail

Utrecht's single, two-branched 10.3 km light rail line is light rail in the true sense of the word. Although the line isn't underground, it is completely grade seperated and closely resembles an above-ground metro. It opened in 1983 and currently connects Utrecht with the towns of Nieuwegein and IJsselstein.

After 30 years of waiting, a second light rail line between Central Station and Uithof University broke ground in September 2012. the 7.5 km line is expected to open in 2018. A new trm line from the city center to the town of zeist is also planned.

Folks like to snuggle, and Utrecht's light rail cars are no different  Here you can see a Swiss made Connexxion LRV spooning up to a willing Fiat truck.
