(January 2000) Plans in the
next five years include completing construction of station Berjozovaja
Roshcha and constructing from there a tunnel up to the Gusino-Brodskij
residential complex. Metro builders are also planning to build a metro
line to the Stanislavskij residential complex on Novosibirsk's left bank.
In specialists' opinion, further metro construction is possible only with
federal assistance. Thus, city authorities passed a decision to make the
metro project the basis of their program, which will be presented in February
to the government of the Russian Federation at an all-Russia meeting.
St. Petersberg
I have been told that it is
against the law to photograph the subway.
Update 1998: Here is a new

A plan is now being discussed
for an automated elevated LRT. Because the only funding would come from
provate investors, and since none have come forward, it is doubtful this
system will be constructed. This was written in a newgroup
a;t.misc.urba.transport about the St. Petersburg trams:
There is really a sharp
contrast between the metro service and the overground tram lines. It seems
like they're only doing maintenance at the overground tram lines when it's
absolutely necessary. I kept looking at some of the tram lines with big
gaps and sharp angles, shaked my head and thought: "This line must be an
abandoned one - no tram can possible pass here". And then suddenly the
tram comes, bumping and shaking. Another time I stood watching a "perfect"
tram-line, and wondered why the tram still was shaking and bumping that
much. Looking at the tram, I quickly understood why; there was no solid
foundation, when the tram came, the lines sunk at least an inch down in
the mud. Salavat

Another special case is secret military city,
manufacturer of weapon-grade plutonium and satellites, Zheleznogorsk (former Krasnoyarsk-26). The
10-kilometer line of subway (5 kilometers of that are in tunnel) continues there
from city's centre to the mining-chemical plant. The standard electric trains
operate on the line there.

Murmansk
nothing
Murmansk, Russia, is located
2,000 kilometers north of Moscow and a two-day train ride. While it has
never been confirmed, I have heard rumors that there were plans to build
a metro there. However, one problem, somebody told me, is that permafrost
would have made it very difficult, if not downright dangerous, to do so.
A cute urban legend in that area says that late at night in the Oktjabr'skaja
district of town, you can hear the escalators leading down to platforms.

"Next years a number residential districts of St. Petersburg will
get
at-grade metro, the construction of which should be 60% cheaper than
that of the underground lines. This decision had been approved on
Wednesday, March 03 by the meeting of authorities.
The annual allocation of 3 mlrd of roubles (100 Mio. ?) from the city
budget for the development of St.Petersburg metro had been agreed as well.
The constructure of the following new stations have been decided at
the meeting: "Komendantskiy Prospekt" - 1st quarter of 2005,
"Parnasskaya" - 2007, the second exit from "Baltiyskaya" station is
planned for the same year, in 2008 - "Admiralteyskaya" and second
vestibule of "Sportivnaya" station.
The section to "Volovskaya" station (the so called Frunzenskiy radius)
will be ready in 2008 as well.
Concerning the construction of at-grade sections, the extention of
Pravoberezhnaya line beyond "Komendantskiy Prospekt" as well as
at-grade station further on along Frunzenskiy radius are foreseen.
