Comments Barcelona has 3 different types of subways operated by 3 different authorities: Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat de Catalunya, the Ferrocarril Metropolita de Barcelona and the 43 km Sarria line.
What do the numbers on the Barcelona metro signs mean? According to one individual, there were many illiterates under the Franco regime. The numbers enabled them to identify the stations.

Although this is not a pure metro link, it is a very cool Bilbao page using VRML technology. Well worth the visit, there is also a section on the subway.

Bilbao is due to open it's first light rail line in December 2002. Trams disappeared for good from the city streets in 1967, and surviving cars were sent to Soller.

The Meto Tenerife will eventually run 65.2km along the east coast of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria in the Canaries. El Tren de la Isla Gran Canaria (TGC) would run from Arucas in the north, via Las Palmas and the airport, to Maspalomas in the south.

The first section to be built, Line 1, will be a 15.1km section between Arucas and Las Palmas, including  7.5km in tunnel, 1.1km elevated, and 6.5km at grade. The 50.1km Las Palmas-Maspalomas section would have 6.8km in tunnel, 3.6km elevated, and 39.7km at grade.

In early January 2003, construction began on a 22 km of light rail. About half of the four line system will be underground, with the first section expected to open in 2007. Euskotren has sent a tram to the city so that citizens will be able to see what their light rail will look like.

    Seville

    LRT subway

According to the 9/28/81 issue of Railway Age, Seville was supposed to have a metro, 6.5 miles under construction as of 1983, with 10.3 miles in the planning/design stages. David Navarro tells me:

"it is true that a project was considered in the eighties, and works even began in 1982. However, floods during the excavation under Guadalquivir River, delays due to the discovery of archaeological remains and mismanagement problems caused the abandoning of the project. For the moment, neither local nor regional authorities seem to have any intention of  resuming the works."

On the other hand, this link tells it differently.

And now we know: the 18.9 km, 23 station Seville metro is under construction and includes 11 underground stops in the city center using in prt the 3 km tunnel that was built in the 1970's.

El Tren de Soller - a 27 km traction line between Palma and Soller in Majorca
There is also an interurban style line on Majorca. For information on the Soller railway and tramway, a great site to visit is this one from Barry Emmott. There are also DMU's on the Ferrocarril de Majorca. As of September 2001, there are definite plans to put part of the railway underground, perhaps making it a full-fledged metro!

At the beginning of the last century Jeroní Estades i Llabrés recognized the importance of a railway connection from the capital Palma to Sóller.
In 1907 he realized his dream and built a 914mm steam-railway. It opened in on April 16, 1912. The train was called "Ferrocarril de Sóller“

In 1913 the electric tram from Sóller to Port Sóller was established. 1929 the steam-traktion was closed. Since that time electric cars (from Siemens Schuckert) are still running between Palma and Sóller.

The tram is also a 914mm railway. The distance from Sóller to Port de Sóller is about 5 km. There are 2 trains working, from 7:00 to 21:00. They depart every 30 minutes.
