Metro Barcelona's metro opened in 1926. It currently has 9 lines and 150 stations, and is 107 km long. When Lines 9 and 10 are completed, it will have 209 stations. Lines 12 and 13 are also under construction. Lines 1 through 5 and Line 11 (known as the Light Metro) are run by the TMB. Lines 6, 7 and 8 are run by a seperate company, the FGC. Lines 6 and 7, along with Suburban lines S1, S2, S5 and S55, make up the Metro de Valles (because it serves the Valles area of Barcelona) while the Metro del Baix Llobregat consists of Metro Line 8 and suburban lines S33, S4 and S8. The FGC lines are considered to be more like commuter lines that have mutated into subways over the years. Except for brief portions of Lines 1 and 8, the system is completely underground. The network uses overhead power as opposed to third rail, as do many Spanish metros. ![]() Barcelona also runs the mostly underground funicular railway. The Funicular de Montjiuc opened for service in 1928. It runs approximaely 758 meters, is part of the metro system and can be accessed with a regular Metro ticket. It is one of three area funicular railways, but is the only one that runs in subway andis managed by the TMB. You can catch it at Metro station Paral-el, at the terminus of Lines 2 and 3. The 14 km Trambaix - line T1, T2 and T30, and the 6.5 km Trambesos - lines T4, T5 and T6. Other than one station on line T1 (Cornelia Centre), the lines are all above ground, street running and often grade seperated.
