The 12.5 km line was opened in 1916 and is one of only two cog railways in Spain. The trains use adhesion traction for the first 5 km of their climb, which begins at 905 meters at Ribes-Enllaç (Ribes Junction) in the Pyrenees. . The remainder of the route uses the cog system, where it finishes 1,967 meters up in Núria, the highest station in Spain. The cremallera is the only way to reach the resort town.
