Light
rail
subway
Goteborg''s first tram opened in 1879, with electrification beginning
in 1902. The 12 routes cover 117 km km of track, 2 of which are
underground, remnants for 1960's plans for a premetro gone bad. A city
center 3 station tunnel is in the planning stages, and has been for
over a decade. The newest plans call for a ground breaking in 2011, The
existing underground section of Goteborg's tram system are actually in
a suburban setting.
Most of Goteborg's tramway is grade sperated street running. The
section to Angered is of light rail standards, although many Angered
passsengers complain of slow tram speeds on sections built for higher
speeds.

A
new rail line, including 6 km of tunnel, has been approved
for Malmo. The town also has a heritage tramway.
Malmö Citytunnel Project Approved
THE Swedish government has approved a SKr 8.8 billion
($US 1 billion) project to build a new line through the centre of
Malmö. As a result, pre-qualified contractors have been
invited to bid for the first tunnelling contracts. However,
construction cannot start until next year as public consultation still
has to be completed and the Environmental Court must examine the
project in terms of noise, vibration, and ground water reductions and
discharges. "Of course there is a lot of work to be done before we can
start digging but the project is entering a concrete and exciting
phase," said Mr Örjan Larsson, Citytunnel's project manager.
The new line will enable trains using the Øresund link from
Denmark and from Ystad and Trelleborg to follow a direct route to
Malmö's Central station via the city centre. The project will
also convert Malmö Central into a through station. A new 11km
double-track line will be built from Malmö Central to the
Øresund link. This section will have 6km of twin-bore
tunnels and new stations at Triangeln and Hyllie. There will also be
single-track connections to the lines to Trelleborg and Ystad. The
project will be completed in 2009.
Norrköping
tramway
Built in 1904, the Norrköping tramway is a mere 13 km, 2 line shadow of
it's former shadow.

The Stockholm subway started
out as a tram underground in 1933. It wasn't until 1953 that a full,
newly
developed metro opened, in large part an evolution of the old tram
tunnels.
Stockholm also has 4 distinct
tram lines, each varied:
# 12 - the Nockebybanan (5.7 km),
# 7 - the Djurgården
line (a 3.2 km museum line)
# 21 - the 8.9 lm Lidingö linen (more of
an interburban)
# 22 -
the Tvärbanan (Crossline), Alvik-Sickla-Udde. Modern Light
Rail opened 1999-2002.
In addition, the Saltsjöbanan is an urban
LRT, partially in tunnel, that has been operating since the late
1800's.
Other pseudo-subway and LRTs include the Roslagsbanan,
the Nockebybanan
and the new LRT subway, the 10 km Årstabanan

Hissbana is a small, underground funicular. It
runs 230 meters through rock tunnel and underneath an apartment
building. The cars
interiors resembles the stockholm subway of the 1960's. It
can be reached from the Liljeholmen station.
