Metro (Tunnnelbana)

The Stockholm subway started out as a tram that went underground in 1933. It wasn't until 1953 that a full, newly developed metro opened, in large part an evolution of the old tram tunnels.

Stockholm's metro has 9 lines totaling 110 km, 63 km of which are in subway. There are 100 stations, not counting one which is abandoned. The lines are grouped into three systems of Red, Green and Blue. Realistically, each "system" consists of a trunk line with a large number of branches, so that some could consider the Stockholm subway system to have three lines. The T-Bana is run by the MTR.

Stockholm's subway stations are known for their artistic beauty rivaling those in cities like Moscow and Serfaus. Especially deserving of honorable metion is Stockholm's Odenplan station, whose stairs have been turned into a giant functioning piano.

Light Rail and Tramway

Stockholm has 4 distinct tram lines, each varied:

The # 12 - Nockebybanan (5.6 km), was part of a larger system that opened in 1914. It has 10 stations and runs on it's own right of way using flexity swift rolling stock.

# 7 - Djurgården line (a 3.2 km museum line)

# 21 - 8.9 lm Lidingö linen (more of an interburban)

# 22 - Tvärbanan (Crossline), Alvik-Sickla-Udde. Modern Light Rail opened 1999-2002

Spånka (pronounced Sponka in English) is the Swedish slang for a tramway

Stockholm also hosts several other urbain railways, variations of subway, light rail and commuter rail:

The Roslagsbanan is a three line light railway in the north-eastern parts of Stockholm.

In addition, the Saltsjöbanan is an urban LRT, partially in tunnel, that has been operating since the late 1800's. Other pseudo-subway and LRTs include the
Roslagsbanan, the Nockebybanan and the new LRT subway, the 10 km Årstabanan
