Waldenburg
commuter "light" rail

The Waldenburgerbahn is a
13.1 km narrow gague railway that opened for business in 1880, although it was not electrified until 1953.  Despite the fact that it serves a rural area, the 11 station line is more light rail than anything resembling commuter rail or interurban. It is considered Line 19 in the Basel tram system, though it's narrow gauge tracks make it the Schweiz sheep in Basel's tram family since it cannot run on the network's standard gague tracks.  The track was rebuilt in 2010, but the gaugue remained the same at 760 mm.

During the summer months, the Waldenburgerbahn shares it's tracks with a steam train tourist railroad.

Affectionate as always, the Waldenburgerbahn lovingly nudges a car out of the way.
