After a renaissance in new light rail systems, a recent (9/2001) announcement by the British government has said the Portsmouth system, to which it's already committed funds, will be the last in the long spending spree. The people in Bath, who have been fighting for and over a system for years, are not pleased.

One final note: If you see the word "subway" in Great Britain, don't be fooled. The phrase refers to what we Americans call an underpass. It is simply an underground passageway used by pedestrians.
