There are no subways in Indana, but there are a couple of resources for traction fans.



The
NorthernIndiana Commuter Transportation Districtis the last interurban in the United Stes outside of a museum. It opened in 1903 and travels over 20 stations. The South Shore line South Bend with Chicago and includes a fascinating street running section in Michigan City. In 1992, a single track extension was opened connecting with South Bend Airport. In 2009, the NICTD applied for a federal grant to study an extension from Gary to Valparaiso.

Indianapolis
people mover

A people mover privately funded by Clarian Health Partners and built by Schwager Davis links three hospitals with downtown Indianapolis. The 2.4 km, 3 station line opened in 2003. The automated line is the first privately owned transit system to operate over city streets in the United States.

If the
Central Indiana Regional Transportation Authority has its way, light rail construction could start as early as 2011. An Indianapolis downtown streetcar project has also been proposed.
