Norfolk-VIrginia Beach
light rail

Virginia has plans for several different light rail and tramways. In August 2011, plans in Norfolk became reality with the opening of an 11.9 km, 11 station light rail line known as "The Tide". Due to high ridership numbers, and because politicians secretly love the train, a 7.4 mile extension to Virginia Beach is planned.

Plans also exist for streetcar lines in Charlottesville,  Roanoke,  Columbia Pike in Arlington and Richmond. In Arlington's case, streetcar plans are moving forward at a rapid pace with plans for three interconnected streetcar lines linking Crystal City and Pentagon City.
