Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon)
Ho Chi Minh CIty (Saigon)
metro under construction
on Line 2 of Ho Chi Minh City's metro
began in February 2008. Groundbreaking finally occurred in
2010. This first line, aptly named Line 2, is scheduled to open in
2016. Of a total 11.3 km length, 9.3 km will be in subway.
In May 2012
a contract was signed committing to construction of Line 1,
which will be 19.7 km long and includes 1 2.6 km underground section.
Construction began in August 2012, and opening day will be in 2018.
The system is expected to encompass 195 km by 2020. It is as yet unclear the type of vehicles that will be used, but it is likely they will be small scale heavy rail subway cars as opposed to light rail cars as defined in the West.
